Before I worked in advertising, I was a working freelance writer.

I was a full-time music critic until I went to grad school and then started the blog FreeDarko because I had a lot of downtime at my TA-ish job. Its popularity, or at least notoriety, allowed me to get my foot in the door writing about the NBA, which eventually led to a weekly column for GQ.

I still write about sports or music occasionally, as well as the occasional piece on politics.
